Killings: Edo Gov declares war on cult activities
In response to a spate of cult-related violence in Edo State, Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo has ordered a robust crackdown on criminal activities associated with cult groups.
This decisive action comes after reports of five killings in the state capital over the weekend, attributed to clashes between rival factions.
In a statement issued by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Bugie Okhuemoi, Okpebholo expressed deep concern over the recent surge in violence. He stressed that the government would not tolerate any acts that threaten the safety and security of residents.
Governor Okpebholo reflected on previous efforts to curb such violence, noting that he had previously convened meetings with leaders of suspected cult groups to establish a framework for accountability. However, he lamented that some individuals have chosen to ignore their commitments, leading to renewed violence.
The governor has instructed security agencies to take immediate and decisive action against those who continue to defy the law. He affirmed that offenders would face the full consequences of the Edo State Anti-Cultism and Kidnapping Law, reiterating that there would be no exceptions.
He reassured citizens that the administration remains steadfast in its mission to eliminate cultism and criminality from the state. The governor urged law-abiding residents to maintain their daily activities while security forces work tirelessly to restore peace and stability. Governor Okpebholo’s administration is committed to fostering a safe and prosperous environment for all.
