Kaiama attack: Government reacts as terrorists kill five forest guards
An early morning attack by terrorists on Nuku community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State has left at least five members of a local forest guard, including their commander killed
According Afrika Eyes, the attack occurred around 3:00 a.m., when heavily armed assailants invaded the community, unleashing violence on security personnel stationed in the area.
The attackers also reportedly destroyed several properties during the invasion, leaving a trail of devastation in the community.
In addition, motorcycles belonging to the forest guards were set ablaze, while patrol vehicles operated by the mobile police were not spared, as they were also burnt by the terrorists.
Recall that Kaiama local government has been under incessant attack by suspected terrorists believed to be a faction of Boko Haram.
In february, no fewer than 176 persons were kidnapped after a deadly attack on Woro community that left hundreds of people killed. The kidnapped victims remain in captivity as the terrosist continue to demand for ransom.
Government reacts
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq have however reacted to attack which occured in the early hours on friday.
In a statement released by Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, Alhaji Bashir Adigun,he noted that terrorists pose a great threat to the local communities.
The governor however urged the military high command to enhance their “strategies in the fight against the bad faith actors”.
The governor who stated he recieved the incident with heavy hearts. He also commended the bravery and patriotism of the forest guards who he said neutralised dozens of the terrorists during the unfortunate incident.
“I commend the efforts of the security agencies in this theatre and urge them to do more,” AbdulRazaq said.
“Nothing can truly compensate for the ultimate sacrifice that the fallen guards have made on our behalf. Our sincere condolences go to the families and communities of the forest guards. They will forever remain our heroes”he added.
“We are, nevertheless, committed to supporting their families. I pray that Almighty God repose their beautiful souls and give us victory over these terrorists.”
Meanwhile, the Governor has also constituted the Kwara State Security Strategy Committee comprising Kwara-born retired military generals and top security officers.
The committee consists of retired Major General GA Wahab (chairman); Maj. Gen. Yemi Abidoye; Maj-Gen. Abubakar Ndalolo; Rear Admiral Aliyu Lawal; Air Commodore ASA Buhari; AIG Aderemi Opadokun; and Lt. Col. WA Lawal.
Permanent Secretary (General Services) Shuaib Abdulganiyu (fcia) will serve as the Secretary of the Committee.
The Governor is scheduled to meet with the committee later today, Friday April 10, for their inaugural meeting.
