Just In: After Super Falcons, Tinubu rewards D’Tigress with $100k each for historic AfroBasket win
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a remarkable reward of $100,000 for each member of the victorious national female basketball team, D’Tigress, following their impressive triumph at the AfroBasket tournament.
This announcement took place during a reception at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, with the President represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
“You have made Nigeria proud with your outstanding performance,” Shettima commended the team.
In recognition of their achievements, the President also conferred National Honours upon the players and presented each of them with flats.
The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, and Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, were among the dignitaries who celebrated the basketball champions, including the coaching crew led by Head Coach Rena Wakama.
D’Tigress arrived at the Presidential Villa shortly before 5 p.m. and were warmly welcomed into the New Banquet Hall.
Their victory over Mali, with a score of 78–64 in the final held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, marks their seventh AfroBasket title and fifth consecutive win, reinforcing their dominance in African women’s basketball.
This announcement comes just a week after President Tinubu hosted the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s female football team, who also received a $100,000 reward each after securing their tenth WAFCON title in Rabat, Morocco—an event that has sparked varied reactions among citizens, especially online.
