The Kwara State House of Assembly has called for a thorough investigation into the persistent fuel scarcity and fluctuations in petrol prices that have affected residents across the state.
During the plenary session held on Wednesday, 8th May, 2024, presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Engr. Yakubu Danladi Salihu, the House resolved to examine the causes of these issues and find long-term solutions to mitigate their impact on the public.
The matter was raised as a “Matter of General Public Importance” by Hon. Babatunde Ayi Olatundun (Ilorin North-West), who called attention to the increasing hardships faced by Kwara residents due to the erratic supply of petrol and the resulting spike in prices.
The motion was seconded by Hon. Abdullahi Halidu Danbaba (Kaiama/Kemanji/Wajibe), indicating a strong consensus among the lawmakers on the need for urgent action.
In her presentation, Hon. Olatundun pointed out that petrol, also known as Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), is a crucial component in the energy sector, driving the economy through transportation, industry, and agriculture.
She stressed that the scarcity and price fluctuations have led to significant social and economic disruptions, causing inconvenience and financial strain for many residents.
Following the debate, the Kwara Assembly made several key resolutions to address the fuel scarcity and price fluctuations.
Firstly, the House commended the Governor for setting up a task force to investigate the causes of the issues.
Secondly, they urged the Governor to ensure the task force takes prompt and decisive action against any fuel marketers found engaging in sharp practices or hoarding fuel to manipulate prices.
Finally, the House directed its Committee on Commerce, Industry, Women Affairs, and Social Development to monitor the task force’s work to ensure transparency and effectiveness in its efforts to stabilize the fuel supply in the state.
