Ilorin West/Asa needs a representative who understands policy, performance — Prof. Aremu
… says PDP is ready to take power with credible candidates across all elective positions
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Asa/Ilorin West Federal Constituency seat, Professor Abdulfatai Aremu, has said that the constituency requires a representative with a deep understanding of policy formulation, legislative responsibilities, and performance-driven leadership to effectively address the challenges facing the people.
Speaking with journalists in Ilorin, the renowned political scientist noted that effective representation goes beyond occupying a seat in the National Assembly, stressing that constituents deserve leadership that can translate government policies into tangible development and opportunities for the people.
According to him, the role of a federal lawmaker is not merely to attend legislative sittings but to influence policies, attract meaningful projects, facilitate empowerment programmes, and advocate for the needs of constituents at the national level.
“Ilorin West/Asa deserves a representative who understands policy and performance. The people deserve someone who can effectively engage government institutions, influence decisions, and ensure that federal opportunities are brought closer to the constituency,” he said.
Professor Aremu maintained that the development aspirations of the constituency can only be achieved through strategic and result-oriented representation anchored on competence, accountability, and a clear understanding of governance.
The PDP candidate further expressed confidence in the readiness of his party to reclaim political power through the emergence of credible and competent candidates across various elective positions.
He stated that the PDP remains committed to offering Kwarans an alternative platform built on experience, inclusiveness, and people-oriented governance.
Aremu also took a swipe at the ruling APC government in the state, arguing that many of those entrusted with leadership positions lack the depth of experience, competence, and capacity required to effectively manage the affairs of government.
According to him, governance requires more than political slogans, noting that the challenges confronting Kwara today are partly the result of placing individuals in critical positions without sufficient preparation, exposure, or the requisite understanding of public administration and development.
“You cannot expect outstanding results when leadership is not driven by competence and experience. Governance is serious business. It requires people with capacity, vision, and the ability to assemble the right talents for the right responsibilities,” he said.
The professor added that the growing public conversations around the return of former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, reflect what he described as a yearning by many residents for experienced leadership and a governance style that prioritizes merit and effective service delivery.
“Many people are today reminiscing about the Saraki era because they believe it was a period when government attracted quality hands into public service and placed emphasis on competence. Whether one agrees with that sentiment or not, it is a reflection of the growing desire among the people for leadership that understands the state, understands governance, and knows how to identify capable individuals for different responsibilities,” he stated.
“The PDP is prepared for the task ahead. We have worthy candidates with the capacity, experience, and vision required to deliver quality leadership and responsive governance. Our focus is on the people and their aspirations,” he added.
Professor Aremu also called on residents of Asa and Ilorin West to actively participate in the democratic process and support leaders who possess the competence and commitment necessary to drive sustainable development.
He assured constituents that, if elected, he would prioritize youth empowerment, education, economic development, and improved access to federal opportunities while ensuring regular engagement with the people.
The professor-turned-politician reiterated his commitment to running an issue-based campaign centered on ideas, performance, and solutions to the challenges confronting the constituency and the state.
