Contrary to a news story making rounds on the social media last night on a purported fire outbreak at the Ilorin International Airport, fresh facts have emerged about the feared incidence.
The Airport authority has come out to explain that there was no fire outbreak, and in fact, what happened was a routine habit of burning bushes within the airport for medical and security reasons.
According to a statement by the SSA Media and Publicity to the Kwara State government, Dr. Muhydeen Akorede early this morning, such reports are untrue. He said, “Claims that Cargo Terminal or Ilorin International Airport caught fire on Sunday night are untrue. According to airport officials, the bush close to the runway was burnt for safety reasons. Airport and Cargo Terminal are intact”.
Dr. Akorede in his salvo, also had words of caution for journalists to quit sensationalism in their reportage.
” Again, I want to caution against the tendency to sensationalism. We need to FACT CHECK. What happened last night was controlled burning by FAAN staff with the fire service in attendance.”
Meanwhile, upon visit to the airport this morning by Theinformant247 reporter, there was no sign of mishap or dismay overnight and work has since resumed normally.
