Ilorin fire: Power surge razes shop at Tipper Garage, Tanke

Tension gripped traders at Tipper Garage in the Tanke area of Ilorin South on Sunday after a sudden fire outbreak destroyed a shop in a row of nine.

The incident, which occurred around 1:12 p.m. on August 24, was traced to a power surge, according to the Kwara State Fire Service.

A press statement – signed by the Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara state Fire Service, PFO Hassan Hakeem Adekunle – stated that firefighters who rushed to Joseph Duntoye Street, where the building is located, were able to prevent the flames from spreading to the other shops and nearby structures.

He added that their swift intervention saved traders from what could have been a devastating loss.

In the statement, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service urged residents and business owners to take electrical safety seriously.

He warned that poor wiring and power surges remain common causes of fire disasters in the state.
