At least two police officers attached to the Imo Police Command were killed by suspected militants of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the early hours of Tuesday, June 11, 2024. The attack also claimed the life of a civilian.

The unfortunate incident took place in Akabor, located in the Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, and was confirmed by Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye.

According to Okoye, the gunmen ambushed the officers during a stop-and-search operation. He added that the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Danjuma Aboki, has deployed the command’s Special Tactical Squad to work with other security agencies to apprehend the assailants.

“The tragic incident was perpetrated in the early hours of Tuesday, June 11, 2024, by hoodlums suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate Eastern Security Network (ESN) who attacked the operatives in their numbers firing sporadically,” Okoye said in a statement.

The officers fought valiantly but, unfortunately, two personnel and a civilian were fatally hit. Aboki expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and assured the public that efforts are underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.
