Gunmen suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Wednesday reportedly killed five soldiers and one unidentified civilian in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
It was gathered that the soldiers were in a Toyota Sienna vehicle on surveillance when the hoodlums attacked them.
An eyewitness said the incident happened opposite Zenith Bank in Umunze between 1pm and 2pm.
The spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, Ikenga Tochukwu, when contacted, could not say if soldiers were killed but confirmed that there was shooting in Orumba.
“I cannot confirm if soldiers were killed, but can only confirm shooting along Umunze Road opposite Zenith Bank,” he said.
Ikenga, however, said the command had deployed its men in the area to maintain peace and order.
