Governors’ forum mourns late army chief Lagbaja, commiserates with President Tinubu

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq-led Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has joined President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians in mourning the death of the Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja.

The Informant247 had earlier reported that the former Chief of Army Staff was reported dead on Tuesday night in Lagos after a long period of illness.

In a statement signed by its chairman and the Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, it said, “We send our profound condolences to Mr. President, the Nigerian military establishment, and the family on the sad loss of this great patriot.”

The statement added, “Our hearts are especially with the family and the Nigerian Army at this difficult moment. We are comforted by the unforgettable memories of his unblemished services to our country. Even in death, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja stands honoured for his bravery and dedication to a greater, united Nigeria.

“We ask Almighty God to forgive his shortcomings, admit him to al-jannah Firdaus, and give his family the strength to get through this tough phase of life.”

Lagbaja, an alumnus of the prestigious U.S. Army War College, is reported to be survived by his beloved wife, Mariya, and their two children.

He was appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, by Tinubu.

Meanwhile, Tinubu appointed Olufemi Oluyede as the acting Chief of Army Staff last Wednesday as Lagbaja was confirmed indisposed for weeks.

On Tuesday, he decorated Oluyede as Lieutenant General.

“It is both an honour and a privilege to decorate you today.

“This recognition reflects your commitment and service to the Nigerian military, which speaks volumes through your exemplary record.

“We recognise all that you have been doing to ensure the country is safe and stable,” the President said.
