Gombe NYSC seeks govt support as windstorm devastates camp

The Gombe State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Chinwe Nwachuku, has urgently called on Governor Muhammadu Yahaya to intervene following significant damage caused by a windstorm at the NYSC orientation camp in Amada, Akko Local Government Area.

During the swearing-in ceremony of the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream II corps members on Friday, Nwachuku expressed deep gratitude for the governor’s support but highlighted pressing issues affecting the safety and welfare of the corps members and the camp community.

“With tears in my eyes, I want to bring to the attention of His Excellency a very pressing concern,” Nwachuku stated. She described the aftermath of the storm, which occurred on Tuesday, revealing that it had blown off the roof of the camp’s multipurpose pavilion and damaged several hostels, leaving some rooms exposed to the elements.

“This pavilion is vital for our activities. Some rooms are not just leaking but are completely open,” she explained. “It would be unthinkable to wish for dry weather during this planting season, but my children are anxious about what will happen if it rains.”

Nwachuku made a heartfelt appeal for emergency repairs to restore a safe environment for the corps members, emphasizing that such support would inspire them to serve the state with greater commitment. “Your assistance will not only provide safety but also motivate these young individuals to excel in their service,” she urged.

She expressed her appreciation to Governor Yahaya and the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Halima Mohammed, represented by Justice Zainab Abdulkadir, who administered the oath to 1,629 corps members—893 male and 736 female.

In welcoming the new corps members, Nwachuku encouraged them to uphold discipline and respect local laws and customs.

Governor Yahaya, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Manassah Jatau, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to the welfare of the corps members. He urged them to embrace cultural diversity and respect the beliefs of their host communities. “Adapt to the culture of your environment. It is our expectation that your batch will excel,” he said.

The ceremony marked the beginning of a three-week orientation course for the newly deployed corps members in Gombe State.
