FUTA student commits suicide in Ondo

Oluwapelumi Joseph Olona, a 300-level student of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State, has taken his own life.

Olona committed suicide in his room in an off campus hostel in the Aule area of Akure metropolis.

His close friends forced their ways into his room and found his lifeless body, Saturday, January 21, 2023.

Sources said his friends started worrying about his whereabout when they could not reach him, as he was not picking his phone calls.

The deceased did not also open the door of his room, after several knocks by his friends.

“Upon gaining entry, his body was discovered hanging with the buckets used to aid his legs.” the source said.

The reason for taking his own life was not ascertained but close neighbors said he might have taken the decision because of financial problems and depression.

Olona was described by those who knew him as a jovial and friendly person who was not caught fighting anyone.

The sad development was confirmed in a statement released by the president of the institution’s students’ union, FUTASU, Jesunifemi Asoore.

“I know we are all saddened by his death, and we’re sending our condolences to his family and friends. Death can be difficult for us to understand, especially when it is sudden. Many of us may be confronted with a variety of emotions, which might include shock, sadness and confusion. We want to assure you that we, the Students Union Government, care about you and the feelings that you may be experiencing.” he said.

In a similar vein, the spokesperson of the state police Command, Funmi Odunlami, also confirmed the incident in a statement released Saturday, January 21, 2023.

“His body had been taken to the morgue, and investigation has started to unravel the reasons behind his action, but it was a case of suicide.” the PPRO said.
