Fielding a strong northern candidate crucial to unseat Tinubu in 2027 – Dele Momodu
Dele Momodu, a former presidential candidate and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has stressed the necessity for the opposition to field a strong northern candidate in the upcoming 2027 elections to effectively challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Momodu, in an interview with Arise TV, argued that northern voters feel sidelined under Tinubu’s leadership due to perceived favoritism towards the south.
He stated, “I believe Tinubu can only be effectively countered by another strong candidate from the North. Any southerner who thinks they can challenge Tinubu is likely wasting their time.”
He further emphasized the strategic importance of uniting northern political figures to bolster the opposition’s chances. “We need a united front,” he urged, citing influential figures like Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as vital contributors to this effort.
Addressing the current state of the PDP, Momodu noted a divide within the party, where half of the members pursue coalition talks while the rest remain committed to traditional loyalty. “This creates confusion,” he remarked, suggesting that the party must adapt or risk obsolescence.
He cautioned that without significant reforms, the PDP could face a fate similar to that of other historical parties that have disappeared from the political landscape.
“Many parties have faded away. The PDP could be on a similar path unless significant reforms are undertaken,” he stated.
In defense of Atiku Abubakar’s integrity amidst swirling rumors, Momodu dismissed claims of Abubakar aligning with the APC as “simply implausible.” He concluded, stating, “The APC itself is riddled with internal problems, lacking the discipline or cohesion to address critical issues.”
