FG to establish Nigeria as Africa’s aviation hub, says aviation minister

During the seventh edition of the Aviation Africa Summit and Exhibition 2023 held in Abuja, Mr. Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, declared the Federal Government’s ambition to position Nigeria as the aviation hub of Africa.

Keyamo outlined the government’s strategy to address industry challenges and attract foreign investors.

Keyamo stated, “The government is already looking at the Aircraft Leasing Company, Aircraft Maintenance Organisation, Forex availability, and Tax holidays to improve the aviation business in Nigeria.”

These measures include upgrading the Cat3 landing system at major airports, constructing a second runway in Abuja, implementing airport improvement programs through concession agreements, and partnering with companies to transform major airports into Aerotropolis.

Furthermore, Keyamo emphasized the government’s willingness to support the establishment of a world-class Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility, considering the shortage of qualified engineers.

He also committed to ensuring forex availability for entrepreneurs and resolving forex-related issues through quarterly meetings with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Keyamo said, “I wish to reiterate that my administration will continue to sustain the support being given to the industry. By building a transparent, stable, and predictable investment climate, as well as including aviation in the continent’s national development plans.”

He underlined that tax holidays would be provided to incentivize investment in the Nigerian Aviation Sector.

The minister acknowledged that air transport is an essential component of the global transportation system, playing a crucial role in economic, social, and cultural development worldwide.

He highlighted that air transport generates economic growth and development, provides jobs, and fosters a range of socio-economic benefits.

Keyamo emphasized the importance of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and business development within the African aviation community to address industry challenges effectively.

He praised Times Aerospace Limited for championing the Aviation Africa Summit and making Nigeria the first West African country to host this prestigious gathering.

In conclusion, Keyamo noted that recent global events have underscored the vital role of air transportation as a catalyst for economic development and a key instrument for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
