FG must borrow to run Nigeria’s economy, says Ondo lawmaker

Ondo Senator Jimoh Ibrahim

Jimoh Ibrahim, the Senator representing Ondo South District in the National Assembly, Jimoh Ibrahim, on Monday maintained that the Federal Government must borrow to run the economy.

Ibrahim, while speaking on the Channels Television programme, ‘Politics Today,’ said, “If you don’t borrow to run the economy, what do you want to do?

“Where do you want to get the funds to run the economy? Dubai, with a population of 12 million people in total, is owing $168 billion and look at what they have used the money to do. They are paying back now at $10 billion  a month.”

The lawmaker noted that Nigeria, whose population figure is 250 million, “is owing $77 million, now you have challenges here and there. So, the key issue here has to do with the fact that you must borrow to run the economy.”

Ibrahim, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs, maintained that borrowing will help the FG to build critical infrastructure, which will enable it to repay the loan over time.

Earlier, Ibrahim had stated that the 422 persons funded by the Nigerian government to the  COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, are too small, adding that the number of delegates had an influence on knowledge sharing at the event, saying Nigeria was suffering from the impact of environmental pollution.

“Funding (over) 400 people to a conference like this is too small. You may want to host the conference sometime in future,” he stated

The lawmaker said the international community wouldn’t take President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as seriously if he was in Dubai with a lean delegation.
