FG launches forest guards project to enhance national security
In a significant move to address escalating security challenges, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu announced that the Federal Government is establishing a forest guards programme under the Renewed Hope agenda.
President Bola Tinubu approved the creation of the National Forest Guard system on May 15, with each state tasked to recruit between 2,000 to 5,000 forest guards based on their capacity.
Ribadu stated, “I tell you that what lies ahead is leadership that will transform and better Nigeria as part of the Renewed Hope agenda,” highlighting the initiative as one of many aimed at safeguarding communities and protecting the country’s natural resources.
Many states have already initiated their forest guard units before the federal announcement, albeit with limited resources and support. Ribadu reassured the public regarding the security of the nation, saying, “Your country is in good hands,” and emphasized daily improvements within the security sector that may not always be visible.
He called on security personnel to stay motivated in their duties, urging them to pursue peace and order: “Whatever it takes for us to have a peaceful, law and order country, go after the bad people, change things.”
Gen Buba Marwa, Chairman of the NDLEA, linked drug trafficking directly to national security threats, stating, “We know from both intelligence and experience that drug abuse and trafficking are central to many security challenges in the country.” He pointed out the considerable achievements of the NDLEA under Tinubu’s administration, including the arrest of over 40,000 drug offenders and the rehabilitation of more than 24,000 users.
Attorney General Prince Lateef Fagbemi praised the measures taken to combat these issues, acknowledging that the progress made at the NDLEA is crucial for national safety. The government is determined to enhance security and restore peace across Nigeria.
