FACTCHECK: Do WhatsApp DP default colours have meaning?

CLAIM: Different default WhatsApp display picture (DP) colours have specific meanings. For example, blue means a contact has blocked you, red means you have not chatted much, green means the person has not saved your number, and light green means the contact was once among your frequent chats.

VERDICT: False. WhatsApp does not assign meanings such as blocking, unsaved contacts or chat frequency to the colours of default profile icons.

A viral post circulating on X, formerly Twitter, claims that the colour of a user’s default WhatsApp display picture reveals information about the relationship between two users.

The post, shared by user @fifss__, reads:

“Y’all know what these colors mean on WhatsApp??

Blue – the person has blocked you.
Red – you haven’t talked to them much yet.
Green – the person hasn’t saved your number.
Light green – the person was once in your frequents, but isn’t anymore.”

As of June 23, 2026, the post had attracted more than 616,700 views, 1,800 likes, 205 comments and 1,400 bookmarks. A similar claim was also shared on Facebook by user Tsediso Tlali.

Findings

The Informant247 contacted WhatsApp to verify the claim. The response indicated that the claim is false.

“This is completely false,” WhatsApp responded to The Informant247 email.

There is no feature on WhatsApp that uses the colour of a default profile icon to indicate whether a user has blocked someone, saved a contact’s number or how frequently two people communicate.

The confusion likely stems from WhatsApp’s visual redesign. In 2024, the messaging platform began introducing a refreshed interface with updated colours, icons and illustrations. Later, WhatsApp also tested and rolled out themed placeholder icons for contacts and groups that do not have profile photos. These colored icons were introduced to make chats easier to distinguish visually and improve the app’s overall appearance.

The colours are generated as part of the app’s design and do not reflect a user’s privacy settings, contact status or interactions with another user. There is no official documentation from WhatsApp linking the colors to being blocked, unsaved contacts or chat history.

Verdict

The claim that WhatsApp default display picture colours reveal whether someone has blocked you, saved your number or how often you chat is FALSE. The coloured default icons are simply part of WhatsApp’s design updates and have no hidden meaning related to users’ relationships or account status.
