Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was on Saturday March 18, 2023 absent at his polling unit 22, Ward 11, Olusomi compound, Totoro, Abeokuta-North local government area of Ogun State in Saturday’s governorship and state houses of assembly elections.
This would be the first time the former president will not participate in elections since the beginning of fourth republic in 1999.
He was the first elected president in the fourth republic. He re-contested in 2003 and got re-elected.
He was a military Head of State in 1976.
He declared open support for the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi in the February 25 presidential election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced Tinubu as the winner of the presidential election.
According to INEC, Tinubu came victorious with 8.8 million votes.
The presidential candidate of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar came second with 6.9 million votes, while Peter Obi, had 6.1 million votes.
It was gathered that the former Nigerian leader was not at his polling unit today to exercise his civic responsibility.
When contacted, his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi confirmed his principal had traveled out of the Nigeria 10 days before the election.
He said “Chief Obasanjo had traveled 10 days ago to India, US and, UK. He was supposed to return back to the country yesterday (Friday) March 17 but could not return.”
