Escalating war: FG urges Nigerians in Iran, Gulf to stay vigilant
The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued an urgent safety advisory to its citizens residing in the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighbouring Gulf states following escalating military activities in the region.
The advisory comes amid reports of airstrikes carried out by Israel and the United States on targets in Iran, as well as retaliatory measures reportedly taken by Iran in parts of the Gulf.
In a statement dated February 28, 2026 (Ref: MFA/PR/2026/21), signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, the government urged Nigerians abroad to exercise heightened vigilance and strictly adhere to safety protocols amid the unfolding security situation.
The ministry advised citizens to maintain situational awareness and avoid areas close to military, strategic, or government installations that could become potential flashpoints. It also recommended limiting non-essential travel and postponing public gatherings or demonstrations until the security environment stabilizes.
Nigerians were further encouraged to comply with directives issued by local authorities and to rely on credible news sources for updates, while avoiding misinformation. They were advised to monitor official communications from Nigerian missions and host country authorities.
The Nigerian Embassy in Tehran, alongside missions in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, has been placed on high alert to provide consular assistance and facilitate communication with Nigerian citizens.
The Ministry assured that the government is closely monitoring developments and will provide timely updates as necessary, reiterating that the safety and welfare of Nigerians abroad remain a top priority.
It also appealed to all parties involved in the conflict to exercise restraint and pursue dialogue, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic engagement in ensuring regional stability and global peace.
