End of an Era: NFF President, Amaju Pinnick dumps third term agenda
The President of the Nigeria football federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick has reportedly dumped his third term agenda to return to the ‘glass house’.
The development is coming after the apparent disenchantment of football stakeholders towards the President due to the failure of the Nigeria Super Eagles to qualify for the Qatar World Cup.
In a leaked audio, Amaju, who is also a FIFA Council member acknowledged his eligibility to run for third term according to the statutes of the NFF which allow him to do so but said he wouldn’t seek for re-election due to his family’s advice.
“I’m eligible to run for third term according to the NFF status. Do I want to run? It’s a no, my family is very key to me, they said it’s taking a toll on me and the family. They believed that I’ve done my best and it’s time to move on.” He said in the leaked audio.
Amaju became the NFF President in 2014 after winning an elective congress which held in Asaba, Delta State Capital. He won his second term bid in 2018.
The stewardship account of the former Chairman of Delta State Football Association has divided opinions amongst football stakeholders.
Under his auspices, Nigeria won U-17 male world cup in 2015, clinched Women’s AFCON in 2016 and 2018, and scooped bronze medals at the 2016 Olympics and African cup of Nations in 2019.
