Election: AIG cautions politicians against using social media to breach peace

Mr. Kayode Akande, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone XI Command, Osogbo, on Friday warned political candidates and their supporters against using social media to spread inciting statements that could cause breach of peace.

Akande, whose command covers Osun and Oyo States, stated this while decorating the Public Relations Officer of the Zone, Benjamin Ayeni and OC of X-Squad, Olusola Oyelumade both Superintendent of Police with their new rank of Chief Superintendents of Police.

In a statement released by Ayeni in Osogbo, the AIG commended the people of Oyo and Osun States, especially the electorates, for conducting themselves in an orderly and peaceful manner during February 25 presidential and National Assembly Elections.

The statement read: “Like a football game, we are at the end of the first half, the second half is coming, let us do it well again.

“While appreciating the uncommon confidence and support of the electorates, who came out in their numbers to exercise their franchise, we extend the goodwill to the media, police and other security agencies, which undoubtedly made the task of effectively policing the elections possible.

“I caution all and sundry, especially political parties, their candidates and supporters, to desist from making and/or using the social media to spread falsehood and inciting statements, which criminal elements could capitalise on to perpetrate acts capable of breaching public peace and order in the state.”
