Ekiti bans smoking in public

In a significant public health initiative, the Ekiti State government has imposed a ban on the public consumption of nicotine and tobacco products throughout the state.

This landmark decision was announced during the flag-off ceremony of the Smoke-Free project and in recognition of World No Tobacco Day 2025, in collaboration with Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA).

At the ceremony, Ekiti State Commissioner of Health, Oyebanji Filani, urged citizens, organizations, and stakeholders to unite against the detrimental effects of tobacco on public health.

Speaking on his behalf, Mrs. Olusola Gbenga-Igotun, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Human Services, reiterated the state’s commitment to implementing a comprehensive public health strategy aimed at safeguarding the well-being of Ekiti residents.

Filani underscored the urgent need for stronger regulations to curb tobacco use and its associated health risks.

“We must empower communities with accurate information and strengthen regulations to close all loopholes,” he stated. He also highlighted the importance of supporting individuals who wish to quit tobacco, ensuring that environments are free from the influence of the tobacco industry.

The Chairman of Ado Local Government, Bosun Osaloni, voiced his support for the ban, expressing the council’s intention to work with the legislative arm to create laws that protect the public, especially the youth, from smoking-related health hazards.

He lamented the odorous presence of cigarette smoke in public spaces, including motor parks and restaurants, as a significant community concern.

Oluwafemi Akinbode, Executive Director of CAPPA, praised the collaboration with the state government as a vital step towards stronger enforcement of tobacco control measures.

He announced the declaration of Ado-Ekiti as a smoke-free city, emphasizing that the city would begin enforcing laws that prohibit smoking in public places and schools.

“This is a crucial step in our pursuit of effective tobacco control,” Akinbode declared. “Our efforts will focus on bringing enforcement closer to the community, where it is most impactful.”

With this ban, the Ekiti State government is making strides toward a healthier, tobacco-free future for its citizens, prioritizing public health and well-being over the interests of the tobacco industry.
