Eguavoen releases 28-man squad list for AFCON 2021

The interim Head Coach of the Super Eagles, Austin Eguavoen has on Saturday released the names of the 28 players that will feature for the country in the AFCON coming up next year January in Cameroon.

Expectedly,the list was fused with regular faces with only two names; Sadiq Umar and Olisa Ndah earning their first call up.

Captain Ahmed Musa, midfield maestro; Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Victor Osimhen, Kenneth Omeruo are many of the top names on the list .

Replacing the injured Paul Onuachu is FC Union Berlin of Germany Striker ,Taiwo Awoniyi who would have the opportunity to feature for Super Eagles Nigeria in the continental showpiece.

Nigeria has won AFCON three times, and with its vibrant attackers, an apparently compact midfield with an all ready defenders, the country stand a chance of getting far in the tournament.

The list is comprised of  four goalkeepers, nine defenders, five midfielders and 10 attackers.

While concern would has been raised on the fact that a new man in person of Austin Eguavoen would lead the team to Yaounde after sacking Coach Gernot Rohr, many also believe that the gaffer has got the impetus to lead them team to glory- giving his experience.

Eguavoen was in charge of the team in 2006 AFCON where he clinched bronze medals.

Nigeria are drawn alongside Egypt, Sudan and Guinea Bissau in Group D.

Eagles will hit the ground running with the opening game when they face the seven time winner of the title, Pharaohs of Egypt on Tuesday, January 11.

Players are expected to start arriving the Abuja camp for the Super Eagles on 29th December, 2021.
