Teniola Apata, commonly known as Teni, is a popular singer from Nigeria. At the International Conference Centre in Abuja on Tuesday, October 11, President Muhammadu Buhari presented her with the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) award in recognition of her achievements.
But there was significant controversy around the award, particularly on social media, where Teni was trending for days.

Teni dragged over MON award
Only a few hours after videos of Teni accepting her MON award from President Buhari went viral on social media, some netizens interpreted Teni’s expressions and said she gave the president an attitude.
Because of how heated it got, Teni’s detractors online included football player Abba Bichi, who said she had humiliated the president.
Bichi said Teni’s attitude was ugly and unsettling, while other high-ranking government officials bowed their heads in respect to the president.
Teni was dragged for calling Erica ‘Omo Igbo’
One of the many famous people that supported Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) reality star Laycon in the house in 2020 was singer Teni.
Teni posted a prayer video for Laycon on Twitter as a sign of her love for him. She began by pleading for the “Omo Igbo” to leave Laycon alone.
Many Nigerians on social media reacted negatively to her comments because they perceived it as a dig at Erica, which sparked a type of tribal war on Twitter.
People from the eastern region of Nigeria claimed they were happy to be “Omo Igbos,” which led to Teni being characterized as a tribalist.
Reactions as Teni allegedly tells bouncers to beat man
In a viral video, a man identified as Malachi Chidiebere Aboh accused singer Teni of ordering her bouncers to beat up his friend, a student at the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
The singer was said to have rebuffed a UNIBEN student that was cheering and hailing her and would rather tell her bouncers to beat up the young man.
While it was unclear what transpired between the singer and the student, some netizens dragged Teni over what happened.
