In an effort to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms, the Delta State Police Command has issued a call to members of the public who possess prohibited firearms to voluntarily surrender them to the nearest police station, area command, or the state headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force.

This initiative aligns with the directives of Inspector General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun and seeks to enhance public safety.

Delta State Police Commissioner CP Wale Abass has provided assurances that individuals who willingly submit illegal arms will not face punitive measures.

A statement released by DSP Edafe Bright, the spokesman for the state police command, emphasized that the voluntary surrender of unlawfully possessed weapons will entail “no sanction.”

The primary aim of this program is to reduce the number of firearms in circulation throughout the state, thereby preventing weapons from falling into the wrong hands and being utilized by criminals.

CP Wale Abass underscored that those who choose to take advantage of this opportunity will not be subject to arrest or harassment.

However, CP Wale Abass cautioned that those who refuse to surrender their arms will not escape legal consequences if apprehended. Possession of any type of firearm, including pistols, rifles, air weapons, or imitations, without proper authorization, constitutes unlawful possession of a firearm and will result in arrest and prosecution.

CP Wale Abass urged residents to report any suspicious firearms-related activities to their local police stations or contact the Police Public Relations Office for swift response and action.

Confidentiality of informants’ identities will be strictly maintained.

For those willing to voluntarily submit illegal arms, dedicated contact numbers have been provided: 08036684974, 08125958005, 09053872287 (Control Room); 09155570007, 09155570008 (PPRO Office).
