Crude oil explosion kills 12 persons in Rivers

12 persons have reportedly lost their lives in crude oil explosion that happened on Friday, March 3, 2023 in Rumuekpe community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The victims of the explosion included women and were burnt beyond identification.

Vehicles as well as tricycles were burnt into ashes in the incident.

It was gathered that the explosion happened around 2am on Friday, at a crude oil tapping point.

The spokesperson of the state police, Grace Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police (SP) confirmed the sad development.

She confirmed the death of 12 persons.

Sources in the community revealed that scores were burnt to death in the incident.

The image maker of the state police command said investigations indicated that the victims of the explosion were scooping crude product when the site exploded.

She said: “So far, about 12 persons are believed to have been burnt to death. The identities of the victims are still unknown.”

The state police Command has advised the people to do away with illegal oil bunkering.

It also encouraged residents to report any activity that can lead to crime or violation of law and order in the state.
