Corps member donates borehole to Abia community

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Mr Victor Akpan, AB/21A/0292, serving in Abia, has donated a borehole to Umuobiala community in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the borehole, which was inaugurated on Friday amid excitements from the villagers was part of his Community Development Service (CDS).

NAN further reports that the excited villagers took turns to praise and pray for Akpan for providing potable water which had been a big challenge to them over the years.

Akpan, who hailed from Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom, is a graduate of Civil Engineering from the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Imo.

He was posted to Queen of Apostles Secondary School, Umuobiala, for his primary assignment.

The corps member expressed gratitude to the school Principal, Very Rev. Fr. Pascal Nnadozie, for sponsoring the project and to the NYSC Inspector in Isuikwuato LGA, Mr Victor Ogbonnia, for his motivation.

He said “I came here and I saw a depressing need, which drew my concern.

“The little children from the primary school were looking for water to drink. Sometimes I buy water for them to drink.

“I started the campaign, reaching out to people to help, I thank God that today my dream has come true.”

Inaugurating the project, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr Denis Jingi, applauded Akpan for initiating and successfully completing a life-changing project for the community.

He appreciated the sponsor and the community for their support and cooperation, saying that it was the first project to be inaugurated by him since assuming office in April 2021 as the state coordinator.

Jingi urged other corps members to always contribute meaningfully to their host communities by executing projects that would impact the people.

The state coordinator, who described CDS as one of the cardinal programmes of NYSC, said the scheme was working hard towards the establishment of the NYSC Trust Fund.

He explained that the bill for the fund, which had passed the second reading at the National Assembly would help the corps members to embark on CDS projects.

An elated Mr Emmanuel Ojie, a community leader in Umuobiala, thanked the corps member for alleviating the plight of the people by providing the borehole.

Earlier, the Chairman of Isuikwuato LGA, Mr Chimaobi Agbaeze, commended the corps member and the scheme for the laudable project, when the NYSC officials paid him a courtesy visit.

Agbaeze, who was represented by the Chief of Staff to the Chairman, Mr Enyioma Ekebuike, described Isuikwuato people as hospitable as he pledged the council’s continuous collaboration with NYSC. (NAN)
