Commonwealth Games: Team Nigeria Para-Athletes win five medals, set world record

Team Nigeria Para-Athletes in the Powerlifting and Discus events were on Thursday in their best form as they claimed two gold, two silver, bronze and set new World Records at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Folashade Oluwafemiayo broke the World Record in women’s Heavyweight Powerlifting event, lifting a series of 130kg, 150kg & 155kg to score a cumulative 123.4 points, adding a gold to Nigeria’s medals haul in Birmingham.

The team, yet again reigned when they scooped gold and silver medals in the event, after Bose Omolayo finished second behind her compatriot to make it a one and two for Nigeria on the podium. Omolayo lifted 145kg and scored 115.2 points.

Goodness Chiemerie Nwachukwu was also a delight to watch after she clinched the gold medal in women’s Discus F42-44/61-64 event with an unprecedented throw of 36.56m.

The male Para-athletes were also not left out as Obichukwu Ikechukwu won a silver in the men’s Heavyweight Powerlifting.

Innocent Nnamdi claimed the only bronze medal Nigeria recorded on,
after he lifted a 2nd round attempt of 190kg to finish 3rd ahead of his compatriot, Thomas Kure who finished 4th lifting 180kg in the men’s Lightweight Powerlifting category.

Meanwhile, it was also relief for Team Nigeria boxers after Ifeanyi Onyekwere boxed his way to the semis of men’s over 92kg Super Heavyweight category.

Onyekwere came through with a 5-0 (Win on Points) over Marcel Mouafo-Feujo of Canada, which means the Nigerian is now locked in for a sure medal in this event.
