Coalition: I’d advise Atiku to stop switching party, if I were his son – Wike
Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), has sharply criticized former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar for his consistent switching among political parties. In a media session held in Abuja on Monday, Wike highlighted that Abubakar has changed political affiliations numerous times since Nigeria transitioned to civilian rule in 1999.
Wike specifically referenced Abubakar’s latest move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stating, “Atiku was in the PDP in 1999, then he joined the Action Congress (AC). After AC, he returned to the PDP, later moved to the All Progressives Congress (APC), and then back to the PDP again, all in pursuit of the presidential ticket.”
He expressed concern over Abubakar’s frequent relocations between parties, saying, “If I were his son, I would sit him down and ask: ‘Dad, how can you keep hopping from one party to another at almost 80 years old?’”
Wike attributed Abubakar’s frequent party shifts to his relentless quest for the presidency and dismissed the credibility of the current opposition coalition against President Bola Tinubu and the APC.
He stated that Abubakar’s exit from the PDP was indicative of his awareness that he would not secure the party’s presidential nomination.
“The way the PDP is now, it is not likely that Atiku would get a ticket, therefore it is not comfortable. Therefore, he tells you, let’s do a coalition against Tinubu. It’s not right,” Wike remarked, emphasizing that the coalition’s formation was largely due to Abubakar’s struggles within the PDP.
