Climate change:  Kwara kicks off 1,600 tree planting campaigns across 16 LGAs

In its efforts to curb deforestation, land degradation and other related climate challenge, the Kwara State Government, through the Agro-climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project, has kicked off a 1,600 tree planting campaign in the state.

The initiative is in partnership with the Universal Climate Initiative (UCI).

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by the Commissioner for Environment and Forestry, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, while speaking at the event, described the initiative as a transformative step toward environmental restoration

He also highlighted the benefit of the partnerships in achieving sustainable development, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

In her remarks, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas noted the importance of addressing climate change and encouraging afforestation in the state.

Also speaking, ACReSAL Project Coordinator Alhaji Shamsideen Olatunbosun Aregbe, while applauding Governor AbdulRazaq for key-in to the initiative project in ensuring that no land is degraded and also the degraded lands are restored, noted that partnering with UCI is a great privilege in fulfilling the core mandate of the Project Development Objective in the State.

The UCI lead, Mr Opeyemi AbdulHafiz Alao, who appreciated the state government for the partnership, stated that the planting of 1,600 trees in Ijagbo is the first phase, with plans to extend to other communities in all 16 local government areas.
