The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN has reacted to the claim that it ordered commercial banks to dispense and accept the old naira notes amid cashless policy crisis.
The apex said it did not direct commercial banks to dispense and accept old naira notes, N500 and N1,000 from the people of the country.
This was revealed by the Acting Director of Corporate Communication CBN, Dr Isa Abdulmumin on Monday.
This came as a reaction to the statement of the Governor of Anambra State, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, claiming the apex bank had ordered commercial banks to dispense and accept the old notes from Nigerians.
He said, “Governor Charles Soludo’s statement emanates from him, not the Central Bank of Nigeria. The Central Bank has not issued any statement directing banks on a collection of old naira notes. I am sure sometime in the future; the bank will issue a statement”.
The Informant247 observes that the silence of the CBN 10 days after the Supreme Court judgment has continued unsettle the stakeholders of the country’s economy.
The Informant247 earlier reported that the apex court ruled that the old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes should remain legal tender till December 31, 2023.
The apex court also condemned the naira redesign policy, and described it as an affront to the 1999 Constitution.
The apex court admitted that the cashless policy has made people adopt trade by barter in this new age in an attempt to survive.
The court described the disobedience of the president to the February 8 order of the court as a sign of dictatorship.
