Bridge collapse kills over 100 persons in India

The collapse of a suspension bridge, over a river in western India, killed over 100 persons on Monday.

Report has it that the accident happened, Sunday evening in Morbi in the western Indian state of Gujarat.

It was gathered that 141 persons lost their lives and 177 people were saved when the bridge collapsed.

The Informant247 learnt that the bridge was recently reopened after renovation work was done on it.

An official of the police explained that 132 persons lost their lives, 100 sustained various degrees of injuries while some are still no where to be found.

Report has it that up to 500 persons were on the 232-metre-long suspension bridge, at the time of the incident.

Pictures and videos which surfaced on social media revealed the pedestrian bridge which appeared broken apart in the middle and several persons clinging on for safety.

Brijesh Merja, Gujarat Labor Minister has assured that an investigation into the accident had been begun.

The office of the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has via Twitter declared that the families of the victims would be compensated.
