Driven by its urge to reduce the effect of climate change and the need to simplify its message for the locals to understand, the Brain Builders Youth Initiative Development (BBYDI) on Saturday took the advocacy of a ‘green environment’ to Danialu and Aduagba communities at Gaa Akanbi area of Ilorin South local government area of Kwara State, North Central Nigeria.
The programme, taking place at the sideline of the ongoing COP28 conference in Dubai, UAE featured a series of orientation sessions hinged on sensitising the locals to protect their environment.
In his opening remark at the event which held under the auspices of Ilorin Climate Cafe, the Global Director of BBYDI, Olasupo Abideen stated that the programme was aimed at exposing the communities to the raging effects of climate change and how it can be mitigated individually and collectively.
“It’s necessary to bring this programme to this community. It’s a bottom to the top approach for us at BBYDI and I believe all the participants here would take the gospel back to their communities to amplify the narratives and stengthen their resolve to protect the environment.
At the event, participants were enlightened on the impacts of Climate change from the level of temperature, erosion and flooding, carbon emission amongst others.
From agricultural activities to environmental sanitation, food insecurity and livestock rearing, BBYDI’s climate change advocates also offered approaches that could be deployed to tackle climate problems.
Participants were also encouraged to habitualize the reusable of materials in order to reduce the indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
Additionally, both communities has now been selected as part of 8 other beneficiaries of BBYDI training of women on the reusable of menstural pad.
One of the participants, Adijatu Isa Aduamigba lamented how insecurity has affected their agricultural activities.
While attributing the issue of food insecurity to theft of Agricultural products, she noted that the programme has also widened the understanding of the participants on the issue of climate change.
Alhaji Muhammed Bello Ayinla, the Magaji of Danialu Alfa commended the BBYDI for the initiative which he said will stimulate proactive response from community dwellers to climate change.
He also called on the government to provide waste dumping clusters in order to prevent indiscriminate exposition of refuse collection.
