Boat capsizes in Nigeria, kills 2
DUTSE, Nigeria, (The Informant247) – At least two people died when a boat capsized in Nigeria’s Jigawa state in the northwest of the country, residents and the police said on Monday.
The boat was carrying 13 people, across a river in Ringim local government area when it sank.
The victims were on their way to a condolence visit from Dabi to Siyango village on Sunday evening when the incident happened, according to the Local Council chairman of the affected area, Shehu Sule Udi.
State police spokesperson Lawan Shiisu Adam said the search and rescue team was launched with the assistance of local divers, adding that seven people were recovered in the process, while the remaining six are still missing.
“Two out of the seven recovered victims were confirmed dead by a medical doctor, while the rest five, who are in critical condition, are still receiving medical attention,” he said.
He said preliminary findings showed that the canoe hit an object and gradually sunk while the occupants drowned.
