Benfica have emerged champions of the Portugal top flight league for the 38th time.

It was their first title in four years and was confirmed after a 3-0 victory over Santa Clara on the final day of the league on Saturday.

Meanwhile, FC Porto were the runners up of the league as they finished two points behind the winner.

It was Benfica’s first since 2019. Since Benfica’s last title, FC Porto had won it twice and Sporting once.

“It was a long struggle throughout the season. We needed the last game and we managed to pull it off. We are very proud, but also relieved by this title. We put in a lot of effort and we deserve to be champions said Benfica coach Roger Schmidt, who joined the club last summer.

Benfica ended the season with the league’s best attack with 82 goals scored and its best defense with only 20 goals conceded

Their win over now relegated Santa Clara was the main thing as they were entering the home game two points ahead of Porto on the final day.

However, even If they had ended up tied on points, Benfica still held the advantage on goal difference in the tiebreaker with Porto.
