The Minister for Youth and Sports Development, Chief Sunday Dare, has tasked Nigerian youths on patriotism and self-development, and to explore opportunities in the society.

Dare gave the challenge at a two-day National Youth Conference at Bayero University Kano (BUK) on Tuesday, saying “the Buhari administration had been youth-friendly.”

According to him, the Federal Government has developed many youths’ engagement programmes and improved existing ones.

The minister added that “it is the wish of President Muhammadu Buhari for youths to be patriotic, productive and selfless.

Represented by his Chief of staff, Mr Abba Yola, the minister announced partnership with BUK in making the outcome of the 2021 Youths Conference achievable.

“The administration’s commitment to youths development made the President to sign the `Not Too Young to Run Act into law.”

He explained that the ministry had a mandate of formulating and reviewing youths engagement and orientation programmes.

Dare added that the ministry was also tasked with the responsibility of coordinating youths and sports development at the state levels, as well as strengthening collaboration with partners.

Commending the theme of the conference — “The Future is Youth,” Dare further urged the younger generation to be law abiding.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of BUK, Prof. Sagir Adamu, commended the Federal Government for identifying and considering the role of youths in the society.

He said the 2021 Youths Conference organised by the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports was a mark of concern toward developing and shaping Nigerian youths to be productive.

The vice-chancellor, however, appealed to the minister to collaborate with the university to produce a blue print and establish a comprehensive document from the outcome of the 2021 International Youths Conference.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference was put together by BUK’s Centre for Economic, Social and Population Research (CESPOR) with the
theme “The Future is Youth.”
