Bandits kill farmer in Kwara community attack
In a renewed waves of insecurity in the northern part of Kwara State, a suspected bandit attack has claimed the life of a farmer in Wodata community, via Zambufu in Edu local governement area of the State.
PUNCH news reported that the victim, simply identified as Amos, was reportedly killed during the incident which occurred around Jummat prayer time on Friday.
A community source, named Hassan, said the deceased and his brother were harvesting cassava on their farmland when the bandits struck.
“He was on top of a tractor while others were loading cassava. Immediately the attackers were sighted, those on the ground fled for safety.
“Before he could dismount from the tractor, he was shot in the abdomen,” he said.
He was said to have been rushed to a nearby health facility and later referred to Ilorin for advanced treatment.
“Sadly, he died on the way due to excessive blood loss,” the source added.
“The incident happened less than one kilometre from Wodata village. This raises fresh concerns about the security of rural communities, especially farmers,” the source said.
The authority are yet to comment on the incident.
Kwara north and waves of insecurity
The latest killing at Wodata comes on the heels of a broader and rising insecurity in the northern part of Kwara State. The Kwara North and Southern part of the state has continued to witness several attacks ranging from kidnapping, banditry and terrorism.
It would be recalled that Edu local government plays host to the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Yikpata which has since been relocated to Kwara State Polytechnic campus in Ilorin due to insecurity.
