ASKOMP calls for release of detained journalists amid controversy
In a recent press release, the Association of Kwara State Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of two of its members, Aiyelabegan Babatunde Abdulrazaq and Oluwatoyin Lukman Bolakale, who have been in police custody since September 11, 2023.
The detention of these journalists stems from a petition filed against them by the former Principal Private Secretary to the Kwara State Governor, Ms. Monsurah Jumoke Gafar.
Clarifying the Situation
ASKOMP, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Salihu Shola Taofeek, provided a detailed account of the events leading up to the journalists’ detention:
- The journalists were invited by phone to the Anti-Kidnapping and Cultism Unit of the Kwara State Police command on Monday.
- Upon arrival, they were questioned about the source of a press release signed by Chief Rotimi Adebowale, which they attributed to the correct source.
- The police requested the phone number of Chief Rotimi Adebowale, which the journalists couldn’t provide. Instead, they provided the contact details of the original source of the press release, who was later identified as a senior government functionary.
- ASKOMP aimed to resolve the situation amicably through Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms. They engaged with Hon. Razaq Owolabi, who seemed willing to facilitate the journalists’ release within 48 hours without court involvement.
- ASKOMP gathered and shared evidence pointing to the government source’s involvement with Hon. Owolabi, who, in turn, relayed the information to the police.
- Despite these efforts, the police have yet to arrest the government source while continuing to detain the journalists.
Nature of the Controversy
The press release emphasized that the disputed story revolves around alleged power struggles within the Kwara State Governor’s loyalists, a common occurrence in political circles. ASKOMP views the prolonged detention of its members without apprehending the culprits as unwarranted victimization. The journalists are being penalized for their dedication to their profession.
A Call for Support
ASKOMP calls on all well-meaning Kwarans and supporters of press freedom to join in demanding the immediate release of their colleagues. The association firmly believes that the continued detention of these journalists is unjust and contradicts principles of press freedom and justice.
