Army, Air Force deal heavy blow to terrorists in Niger
The Nigerian Army, in partnership with the Nigerian Air Force, has reported substantial casualties inflicted on terrorists during an attempted attack on the Bangi community in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.
In an official statement released on Wednesday from Abuja, Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, described the military operation which was executed based on credible intelligence.
Troops engaged approximately 300 armed bandits in Kwanar Dutse Forest, effectively thwarting their planned nighttime transit towards Kwatankoro Forest, where they intended to launch coordinated attacks on surrounding communities.
“Their movement and actions were effectively disrupted by troops who engaged them in a fierce firefight that lasted over three hours,” Anele confirmed.
Following the ground confrontation, the Nigerian Air Force conducted precision airstrikes on the terrorists’ withdrawal routes, leading to heavy bombardments on identified locations.
Although the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, Anele pointed out that multiple blood trails along the escape routes indicate significant losses for the assailants.
Tragically, the operation also resulted in the loss of 17 soldiers, while 10 others sustained injuries of varying degrees. The wounded personnel have been evacuated to a military medical facility for treatment and are currently in stable condition.
“The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of our fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Nigeria,” Anele said. She also noted that medical teams have been directed to ensure the best possible care for the injured troops.
Anele reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to safeguarding communities and upholding the freedom of all citizens. “The sanctity of our freedom shall not be mortgaged.
The Nigerian Army, in collaboration with the Nigerian Navy, the Nigerian Air Force, other security agencies, and the great people of our nation, will continue to work tirelessly to eradicate terrorism and banditry from our society,” she emphasized.
The public is urged to support ongoing counter-terrorism efforts by providing timely information to security agencies.
