APC member opposes third terms, backs Kwara North for guber 2027

A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Yusuf Hassan Taiwo, has called on the party’s national and Kwara State leadership to adopt a uniform policy against third-term bids by lawmakers, extending the principle beyond the National Assembly to the Kwara State House of Assembly.

In an open letter titled “Equality in Equity: Why the State House of Assembly Must Align with the National Principle,” Taiwo argued that if the APC supports limiting prolonged legislative tenures at the federal level, the same standard should apply to state lawmakers.

His appeal follows recent comments by traditional rulers, who reportedly advised against third-term ambitions by members of the National Assembly, citing the need for political renewal and greater opportunities for emerging leaders.

According to Taiwo, applying different standards to federal and state legislators would amount to selective justice and undermine the party’s commitment to fairness.
” If we agree that stagnation at the federal level halts progress, we must also agree that sit-tight politics at the state level breeds complacency and locks out vibrant local talent,” he said.
Taiwo also renewed calls for the APC to zone the 2027 governorship ticket to Kwara North, describing the move as a matter of equity and inclusion.

He argued that the district has remained a strong support base for the APC but is yet to produce a governor under the current political arrangement.

The APC member endorsed the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, as a suitable governorship candidate, describing him as an experienced legislator capable of providing fresh leadership for the state.

He urged the party leadership to adopt what he described as a uniform standard against third-term ambitions across all legislative levels, embrace zoning in favour of Kwara North, and heed the advice of traditional rulers on political succession.

Taiwo maintained that applying the principle of rotation and political renewal only at the federal level while permitting prolonged tenures at the state level would send conflicting signals about the party’s commitment to justice and equity.

He concluded that ensuring equal treatment across all levels of governance would strengthen the APC’s credibility and promote broader political participation in Kwara State.
