Akpabio advocates police reforms to enhance professionalism, public trust
Nigerian Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared the National Assembly’s readiness to support the review of outdated laws essential for driving police reforms and enhancing professionalism within the force.
This statement was made during the Police Service Commission Board Induction/Strategic Management session held in Ikot Ekpene on Monday.
Represented by Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, Akpabio called for the establishment of a reward system for outstanding police officers, emphasizing the necessity for Nigeria to embrace merit, discipline, and integrity over mediocrity and favoritism. He stressed that true reform requires courage to challenge the existing status quo.
Akpabio urged the PSC to implement community policing models emphasizing empathy, conflict resolution, and community engagement, citing successful examples from countries like Japan and Finland.
He underlined the importance of stringent recruitment standards and accountability in transforming the police force, referencing the successful methods employed in Singapore.
“Reform requires courageous disruption,” he stated, adding, “We must elevate the culture of commendation above the culture of condemnation.” He also proposed the development of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and the integration of technology in policing to improve effectiveness and public service.
Acknowledging the various challenges, including funding deficits and public distrust, Akpabio called on the PSC to leave a legacy of reform that surpasses what they inherited. He concluded with a reminder that their appointment signifies a sacred trust to serve, ensuring that the police force is seen as an engine of trust and justice rather than coercion.
