An Upper Area Court sitting in Kasuwan Nama, Jos, on Monday sentenced one Godswill David, 45, a tricycle rider, to 18-month imprisonment.

David, who resides in Busa Buji, was sentenced for stealing a tricycle.

The magistrate, Lawal Suleiman, sentenced David after he pleaded guilty to the offence.

He, however, gave him an option to pay a fine.

Suleiman said that for the offence of stealing, David had to pay a N50,000 fine or serve the 18-month term in prison.

He said the judgment would serve as a deterrent to those who would want to indulge in similar criminal act.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported at the Laranto Police Station on Jan. 5, by one Abdullahi Yakubu of Busa Buji street who is the complainant.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 271 punishable under section and 272 of the Plateau State Penal Code Law (NAN).
