2027: Works Minister Umahi woos Peter Obi to join APC, support Tinubu
Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has called on former governor Peter Obi and other regional opposition figures to join the coalition backing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, highlighting the necessity of unity for the South-East’s advancement.
“Leadership is not about self, it’s about the people. I call on my brother, Peter Obi, to join us and work with the President for the betterment of the South-East,” Umahi stated.
Emphasizing the importance of regional support, Umahi stressed that Nigeria’s unity and prosperity rely on leaders collaborating for the nation’s common good. He announced that tolling for Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will begin in December, marking a major step in one of Nigeria’s key infrastructure initiatives.
“All governors in the South-East are now firmly backing the President’s administration, regardless of their political affiliations,” he affirmed. “The South-East is fully behind President Tinubu, and we are planning a summit to formally endorse him for the 2027 elections.”
Umahi pointed out that the region is witnessing significant infrastructure improvements under Tinubu’s leadership, including the ongoing construction of the Second Niger Bridge and major roads such as the Port Harcourt-Enugu corridor.
“Before, the South-East lacked federal presence. But today, we are seeing real projects. The Second Niger Bridge alone shows the President’s commitment to ensuring fairness across all regions,” he emphasized.
Regarding the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Umahi noted that over 80% of Section 1, which spans 47.47 kilometers from Ahmadu Bello Way to Eleko Junction, has been completed. He forecasted a 10-year return on investment from the tolling initiative.
“The road is more than just a highway; it is an economic corridor and a catalyst for regional growth. It will be the driving force behind significant economic integration across the country,” Umahi concluded, adding that solar-powered lighting and CCTV infrastructure will be included in its design.
