2027: Niger Gov Bago declares self DG of Tinubu’s re-election campaign

Umar Bago, governor of Niger state, has announced his self-appointment as the director-general of President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign.

At a recent All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders meeting in Minna, Bago passionately declared, “I am now the self-imposed director-general of Tinubu campaign for 2027,” and proclaimed Niger state as the campaign’s headquarters.

Bago emphasized the importance of adhering to the unwritten principle of power rotation, urging fellow politicians to respect this practice.

“We are Nigerians, and we love Nigeria. There is an unwritten understanding in this country for power to evolve from the north and to the south and from the south to the north,” he stated, asserting that this has fostered relative peace across the nation.

The governor did not hold back in criticizing party members who have defected or pulled their support from the APC, referring to them as ungrateful.

“You have eaten from APC. APC is what you are… Now, you are on sabbatical and have decided to come together to distort a government,” he remarked candidly.

Bago defended Tinubu against blame for the nation’s ongoing challenges, asserting that these issues were inherited and that significant steps are underway to address them.

“Asiwaju did not spoil your schools; he inherited them. He is trying to fix them,” he noted, calling for loyalty from party supporters during this transition period.

These comments come in the wake of a warning from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which has cautioned political parties and politicians against engaging in “premature campaigns” ahead of the 2027 general election.

The commission reiterated that while engaging in political discussions is allowed, formal campaigning at this stage violates the Electoral Act.
