2027: ‘My commitment to a single term poised on rebuilding Nigeria, not desperate for power’ – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, has robustly defended his promise to serve only a single four-year term if elected in 2027, calling criticisms of his pledge desperate and unfounded.

This response comes after factional leader of the Labour Party, Abayomi Arabambi, voiced skepticism about the sincerity of Obi’s intentions.

In a statement posted on social media, Obi expressed his confusion over the backlash, saying, “I still find it baffling that my decision to do a term of four years… is generating so much agitation.” He clarified that his motivation is rooted in a sincere desire to restore Nigeria rather than personal ambition.

Countering claims of desperation, Obi emphasized, “I have never been desperate in the pursuit of power, or anything else, for that matter.” He distinguished himself from typical characteristics associated with desperate politicians, asserting, “There are some traits associated with desperation, which in no way are in any of my political behaviours…”

Obi underscored his commitment to ethical leadership, insisting, “Throughout my political journey, I have never been involved in thuggery, the snatching of ballot boxes, or any form of electoral malpractice.” He challenged anyone to investigate his history, asserting his clean record in politics.

Arguing for the practicality of his one-term pledge, Obi stated, “In four years we can confront corruption head-on, redirecting resources to priority areas,” suggesting that funds currently allocated to extravagant purchases could be better spent on education and infrastructure.

As the 2027 elections approach, Obi’s commitment to a single term has ignited widespread discussion, drawing a mix of praise and criticism from various stakeholders in the political landscape.
