2027: Fubara, Diri next to join APC after Eno – Akpabio
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has disclosed that the suspended governor of Rivers state, Siminalayi Fubara, along with Douye Diri of Bayelsa, are poised to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Akpabio made this statement during a reception ceremony welcoming Umo Eno, the newly inducted Governor of Akwa Ibom, into the ruling party.
The event took place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, and was attended by notable figures, including Vice-President Kashim Shettima and APC national chairman Abdullahi Ganduje.
“This event is more than just a defection; it represents a movement and a reunification of Akwa Ibom with Nigeria,” Akpabio declared. He expressed a sense of excitement about the changing political landscape in the South-South region, highlighting that Eno’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) marks a crucial shift.
Akpabio remarked, “It was a little bit of a surprise when we (south-south) attempted to go different ways in 2023,” and praised the growing unity among the region’s governors. He added, “Today, Governor Otu is no longer an orphan.”
Akpabio expressed hope that the political tide will bring both Rivers and Bayelsa into the APC fold.
He stated, “After you, who knows? Rivers state will tumble. After Rivers, Bayelsa will join.”
Akpabio, however, promised strong support for President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 elections, saying, “Come 2027, south-south will go one way; the south-south will vote for President Bola Tinubu.” He boldly predicted that Eno would become “the first re-elected governor in 2027,” and affirmed confidence that Tinubu would secure “99.9 percent votes” from the region.
Currently, the APC has gained control of four out of six South-South states, with Rivers and Bayelsa remaining as the last holdouts.
