Youths, Hisbah clash over alcohol confiscation in Kano

Some youths in Kano state have clashed with Hisbah, a body responsible for the enforcement of Sharia law, over the confiscation of crates of beer worth millions of naira from sellers along Abba Road in Sabon Gari area of the state.

It was gathered the religious corps stormed the area to destroy the beer. This angered the youth in the area who mobilised and started blocking the streets with bonfires.

The police arrived at the scene and allegedly beat up residents and made indiscriminate arrests.

Speaking on this development, Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on Wednesday called for calm.

The governor, in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, warned the people not to capitalise on the situation to perpetrate violence capable of throwing the state into chaos.

Ganduje noted that the state government has long worked for peace in the state.

He called on the youth to work towards maintaining the harmonious and peaceful coexistence between the diverse ethnic nationalities living in Kano.

The governor noted that security agencies will not shy away from confronting threats to peace, law and order even if it means making hard decisions in the public interest.

“As a government working for the peace, security, unity and progress of the state, we will not toy with our constitutional and statutory responsibility,’’ he said.

Ganduje added that the government, security agencies and people of conscience would continue to work for peace, law, and order.

He urged security operatives to “always be civil” in the discharge of their responsibilities.
