EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede

Yahoo-Yahoo boys are bringing national shame to Nigeria, says EFCC Boss Olukoyede

Ola Olukoyede, chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has publicly condemned the actions of internet fraudsters, referred to as “yahoo-yahoo boys,” for bringing disgrace to Nigeria on a global scale. His comments came during a media briefing held at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

“These fraudsters have given every Nigerian the opportunity to be viewed with skepticism,” Olukoyede stated, emphasizing the negative perceptions that arise when Nigerians present their passports abroad. “When you stand in the queue among so many people, immigration officers will look at you with some reservation.”

He further elaborated on the critical situation, revealing that these individuals are not just involved in online scams but are also linked to more violent crimes. “Some of these guys are into banditry, kidnapping. When they don’t see people to scam, they resort to these vices,” he noted, highlighting a worrying trend in youth criminality.

The EFCC chairman also pointed out the complexities tied to financial crime, mentioning that many yahoo-yahoo boys engage in money laundering for politically exposed persons. “When they steal money in billions, they give it to these boys,” he explained, illustrating the illicit connections between fraudsters and corrupt politicians.

Olukoyede shared a striking example of a 22-year-old who allegedly turned over over N5 billion within 18 months, emphasizing the dangers these activities pose to Nigeria’s future. “Are those the people we want to hand Nigeria over to? Is that the nation we want to build?” he challenged the audience, urging for collective action.

As the EFCC works to combat these crimes, Olukoyede’s remarks serve as a reminder of the ongoing battle against corruption and the need for integrity in Nigeria.
