Wike: Govs fueling political crisis in Rivers
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has accused several governors of intensifying the political crisis currently unfolding in Rivers State. During a media chat with selected journalists on Monday, Wike revealed that the conflict with suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara was orchestrated by some of these political leaders.
Wike acknowledged Fubara’s recent peace initiative, where he visited Wike alongside two governors from the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, he sarcastically noted that those who encouraged Fubara remain secure in their own positions while the suspended governor faces political isolation.
“Governors came pushing him, where are they now? I think the governors are enjoying their own. Fubara is a young man, I warned him, saying, ‘Look, go this way, go this way, and you will not have problems,’” Wike stated.
The minister expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of lifting the state of emergency imposed by President Bola Tinubu, suggesting it would not resolve the ongoing issues. “Assuming that we don’t settle this problem and the state of emergency is called off, has it ended the problems? No, because the Assembly will still be as firm as they have been. So the crisis will still be there, they will not pass your budget,” he explained.
Wike further underscored the challenges Fubara faces in achieving peace, emphasizing that his supporters are not aligning with reconciliation efforts. “I told him, I do not think you have the capacity to really make this peace. It is not easy; if you are making peace, your people are demonstrating every day. If you are making peace, your people are busy on television insulting people,” Wike concluded.
