Widespread power outages erupt as national grid collapses again
Nigeria is grappling with widespread power outages following a significant collapse of the national grid on Wednesday morning. Reports from the Independent System Operator (ISO) indicate that the electricity generation dropped dramatically from 2,917 MW to just 1.5 MW within one hour, between 11 am and 12 pm.
In a statement posted on Twitter, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) addressed the public, stating, “Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 am today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas. Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilized. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
This incident follows a pattern of instability; on February 12, power disruptions affected several regions after the grid experienced a collapse, which was confirmed by various electricity distribution companies.
On that same day, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) denied rumors of multiple grid collapses in 2025, maintaining that they are focused on ensuring the reliability of electricity supply.
Additionally, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recently reported that no grid collapses were recorded in the first quarter of 2025. The commission emphasized the importance of improving system coordination to prevent future incidents.
The national grid has struggled with numerous collapses in recent years, prompting nationwide blackouts. In 2024 alone, there were at least 11 recorded grid collapses, highlighting a critical need for reforms in Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure.
